Our Mission
To transmit yoga in a way that respects its roots and traditions.
To offer movement practices that keep our bodies doing what we love to do for a long time.
To continue to learn and find inspiration together as a community.
Our Core Values
We create a welcoming and safe community.
Based around the Sanskrit phrase and ethos, “Atithi Devo Bhava,” or the guest is God, we aim to treat all who walk through our doors in a way that respects them as people, and makes them feel taken care of, seen, and heard. Through inclusive teaching best practices, open-leveled classes, clear consent procedures for assists, and Midwestern niceness, we strive to create an environment that feels like a sanctuary and second home. While all people are welcome, all behaviors are not, so we’ve created a code of conduct that outlines the ethical guidelines for participation in our space.
We create access and inclusion.
Closely linked to our first core value, our focus on creating space where all are welcomed means that we also commit to making yoga more affordable, while still affirming the value of our teachers and our business. Our pay it forward program allows people to purchase at-cost yoga classes and gift them to people who need them. We also donate the proceeds from our weekly meditation classes to our pay-it-forward fund. To utilize pay it forward classes, please email anna@movinggalaxy.com . We’re also proud to offer a limited number of partial and full scholarships toward our training programs for BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, veterans, and teachers.
We are education-centered.
Ever been in a class where the teacher offers up a handstand “if it’s in your practice,” and you have no idea how to even begin to learn how to do it? And 30 seconds later, you’ve moved onto something else? We try not to do that here. Classes here will flow, but within the flow of the class, there will be times where you can break things down, practice, and ask questions.
As teachers, we’re also committed to continuing to learn and grow, and learn from each other through continuing ed and our monthly teachers’ practices.
And our teacher training and practice immersions are a cornerstone of who we are as a studio - which is why we structure our teacher certification program first as a practice immersion, progressing to a teacher’s apprencticeship.
We are locally engaged and connected.
We are a woman-owned small business, and we strive to collaborate with other business that have a similar vibe.
We collaborate, we don’t compete.
We think what we offer at the moving galaxy is a little different from what other studios offer - and we’re not territorial about it. Our teachers and students are under no expectation of exclusivity to our studio, and we enjoy working together with other movement spaces and yoga studios, via programming, referrals, and open communication.
Our teachers are fairly compensated.
If you’re in the yoga business, you know how much of a hustle it can be. We pay our teachers a fair wage, and generally do not ask them to take on additional sign-in and administrative roles, so they can be in the studio space to welcome you to class, and by the door at the end of class to say goodbye.
